Background: Dr. Kaplan obtained his medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, internship at U.C. San Diego, and the next two years of internal medicine residency at U.T. Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. He followed this with a fellowship in infectious diseases and has maintained board certification in IM and ID with continuing certification. He practiced full time hospital medicine for 18 years, then joined graduate medical education (GME), in 2016 as core faculty. Over the years he has distinguished himself as a leader in the department of internal medicine, GME, hospital pharmacy and therapeutics committee, and the infection prevention department. In 2026 he was appointed director of GME and the designated institutional official for the Northside Hospital System. He is an active member of the medical executive committee for Northside and leads the employee health department for the system. He is motivated to continue to build on the excellence of the current GME programs by raising the profile of our graduates in Northside’s five-hospital system and the region.
Dr. Kaplan has always focused on patient safety and quality of care. With his infectious diseases background, and medical directorship for the Northside System’s Infection Prevention department, he works to see our performance exceed that of peers in elimination of hospital-acquired infections. Other interests include the care of patients with tuberculosis in Gwinnett County through support of the GNR Health Department’s Preventive Health Clinic. He has received multiple awards from the Medical College of Georgia for excellence in student clerkship education, and in 2026, he won the Lesser Faculty Teaching Award for outstanding residency education in Internal Medicine.
Dr. Kaplan enjoys spending time with his children who attend the University of Georgia, gardening and activities around Lake Lanier.
